The caretaker of this residential vegetable patch in Tachikawa (West Tokyo) has fashioned a crow scarecrow out of plastic rubbish bags. Its form is similar to the TeruTeruBozu, a traditional doll made of paper which is supposed to bring good weather – this black one takes on a sinister air which startled both me and my son. The gardener laughed at the comparison, regretting her ‘poor scarecrow making skills’ and reassured us of its non-voodoo intentions.
