While we mostly focus on street-level gardens (mainly for their ease of access) it shouldn’t be forgotten that even imposing highrise apartment blocks can harbour lush balcony gardens – consisting not only of potplanted flowers but also creepers, medium size trees and edibles.

The balcony spaces are barely big enough to sit in, and most probably house a washing machine and act as a place to hang out the washing to dry. Even so, a number of residents have let their gardens take over (these pictures were taken this summer, and the shade provided by these plants was probably a welcome relief from the heat).
