Ryan Miller introduced us to this magnificent Agave americana (sometimes called American Aloe – 竜舌蘭(リュウゼツラン)) growing in a parking lot (photos by TAKK_).

Apparently the agave grows up to 8m tall, and dies shortly after flowering (with shoots at its base continuing growth for up to a total of 10 years) so this one must be reaching its peak – another extreme example of the resilience and majesty of plants in the face of our relentless drive to bury every grain of soil in the city (if it is, indeed, real!).

While not in Tokyo, this image is definitely in the Tokyo-DIY-Gardening spirit!
